Griotte-Chambertin

2021
Situated just below Clos de Bèze, practically where it adjoins Chambertin, this parcel reveals the land's topography in all its splendor. With its steep slope, the vines benefit from a unique microclimate, probably the warmest among the Grand Crus, with a 5-6 day lead over Chambertin. This sun-drenched, precocious appellation is composed of silts that once flowed down the valley. This unique terroir shapes singular, captivating, wines that delight the senses with a fresh nose, a supple entry with notes of orange zest, citrus and red fruits.
If the 2021 wine year ended with a sunny summer, its beginnings were marked by two devastating waves of frost, which had a profound impact on the vines and endangered the coming harvest. That year, Burgundy enjoyed a mild winter. In spring, after heavy frosts in early April, the return of fine weather finally arrived, providing an ideal climate for flowering. A few weeks later, the start of summer is marked by heavy rain and pervasive humidity. August saw the return of dry, sunny weather for three weeks in a row, favoring optimal ripening of the fruit. At the end of September, the grapes reached perfect ripeness, triggering the start of the harvest on September 23. Production from this capricious vintage is exclusive. Evanescent, full of finesse and elegance, the wines reveal exceptional freshness and volume on the palate.
Notes de dégustation :
A lovely, well-defined, concentrated bouquet. Red fruit with orange and citrus zest. Well-balanced on the palate, with a supple entry and rich red fruit flavours. Good tension. Long, slightly spicy finish.
The 2020 vintage benefited from a very early harvest which began at the end of August. This exceptional vintage, produced in very small quantities due to very hot summer weather, revives the glorious past of the great Burgundies. After a wet, mild winter, the summer of 2020 was dry and hot. During this period, the vines suffered from a lack of water from flowering onwards, leading to a drop in yields. This early, sunny vintage produced some very fine wines characterized by remarkable freshness and tension, with a rare elegance of silky, refined tannins. This grandiose vintage deserves all the care of long ageing in the cellar to reveal its full potential. The ardor of this vintage and its excellent balance will also enable the wines to be enjoyed in their youth, with notes of crisp fruit complemented by floral evanescence.
Notes de dégustation :
A distinctly spicy nose reflects redcurrant with hints of earth, scrub and crushed fennel. The succulent flavours possess both excellent verve and concentrated power on the beautifully detailed finish.
Spring 2019 is marked by highly variable weather, with periods of fine weather and episodes of low temperatures. At flowering, the cool weather caused run-off and a drop in yields. After a scorching month of June followed by a hot, dry summer, the grapes ripened well and were in exceptional condition, enabling the harvest to begin under fine weather conditions on September 17. This vintage, produced in small quantities, produced wines of good concentration. With good tension and minerality, the wines produced from this vintage are rich, with good digestibility, freshness, length and persistence. The tannins are ripe and well-coated, expressing excellent balance.
Notes de dégustation :
Beautiful, deep, lively colour. Aromas of cherries, peonies and roasted coffee beans. Very fine finish.
Winter and early spring 2018 were very rainy. The vines built up their water reserves to cope with the hot, sunny second half of spring. The vintage was also characterized by a particularly hot summer and dry weather. The winter's water reserves enabled the grapes to ripen well, resist the heat and develop exceptional health. The bunches were healthy and perfect for harvesting, which began on September 3. This concentrated, complex vintage has achieved excellent ripeness while retaining its freshness. The wines are distinguished by their finesse and remarkable freshness, and the palate is structured, allowing a myriad of aromas to come through - a virtuoso. This vintage is unquestionably built for laying down to reveal its full potential.
Notes de dégustation :
A fresh, ripe, fairly spicy nose offers notes of red and black cherry, pomegranate, raspberry and violet. There is excellent complexity and density in this wine, with flavours that exude minerality on the powerful, refined finish.
The 2017 wine year was marked by its superlative generosity. After a dry, cold winter, spring proved mild and rain-free. The vines enjoyed pleasant weather conditions, with above-normal temperatures. A hot, dry summer produced fruit of ideal health. Yields were very generous and grapes reached optimum ripeness, enabling the harvest to begin on September 7. The wines from the 2017 vintage are elegant and fine, with good tension, silky tannins and great aromatic complexity.
